The Cycle of Change...

‘Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can and wisdom to know the difference’.

Today I am talking about the things you can and want to change!

Think about a time when you have tried to change something or tried switching something up in your daily routine, it’s not easy! What we know about change is that it is difficult and complex. But what we also know is that when we embrace change and lean into it we can become happier, healthier, and more rounded people. Working on ourselves in this way helps us to become the best version of who we are.

If you are reading this it is likely that you are thinking about changing something in your life (whether that be in your personal or professional life). Whatever your ideas are about change it is useful to think of change as a journey, something fluid and evolving, with small steps of progress, sometimes big strides forwards and definite slip ups, setbacks and relapses.

This is helpfully illustrated by The Cycle of Change (Prochaska and Diclemente), a tool that I have used in my practice for many years (with many different people in many different contexts) and have found it to be so helpful…

Take a look at the cycle and think about the following questions:

  • Where do you think you are at the moment in relation to your change goal?

  • Where do you want to be?

  • What do you need in order to help you move forward?

  • What are your next steps?

If you would like to learn more about the Cycle of Change, I would also recommend listening to this podcast which explains it further: Therapist Uncensored – episode 30 – The Stages of Change – A Roadmap to Readiness.
